We researched, consolidated and are now communicating (to you) the top consumer trends for each of our six industry focuses. It helped us, and we figured it would help your brands, too.

Auto

• The average buyer visits just 1.6 auto dealerships while car shopping, down from 10 years ago when buyers visited an average of five dealerships, according a McKinsey report.

• The Costco Auto Program was expected to sell 375,000 new vehicles, according to CNBC.com.

• The biggest manufacturer trends, which are driven by consumer insights, are: infotainment systems evolution, Apply CarPlay and Android Auto, touch screens, Wi-Fi connected cars and smart cars.

CPG

• Shoppers are visiting a premium store and a discounter as well as a supermarket, in multiple weekly stops; in addition to making frequent purchases online, according to PwC and Strategy&.

• There’s greater demand for more products and brands, with different sizes, packaging, and sales methods.

• Consumers’ media usage has fragmented with the rise of digital content and the proliferation of online devices.

Entertainment & movies

• Consumers are becoming increasingly selective in what they want to buy, and in general, their preference is moving more toward rental/streaming service options as opposed to purchasing outright, according to Deloitte.

• When they do purchase, consumers want to purchase content one time and then be able to view it on any platform, on any device, at any time.

• Companies can take advantage of the new channels and technologies without abandoning more traditional offerings. People will continue to immerse themselves in top-shelf programming on 70-inch HDTVs, and they will also enjoy watching shows on a 7-inch tablet.

Food

• Taste was identified as being substantially more important to baby boomers than it is to millennials, with 44 percent and 29 percent respectively citing it as being important, according to a recent AlixPartners consumer survey.

• Products with “bad” or “unhealthy” ingredients taken out of them — such as low carbs, trans-fat free, sugar free and non-GMO products — were most appealing to baby boomers.

• Millennials surveyed placed greater importance on all-natural and organic attributes than baby boomers (28 percent vs. 19 percent & 44 percent vs. 29 percent, respectively).

Retail

• In-store and digital shopping experiences are converging, and customers want a seamless experience between the two.

• Online shopping is king right now. During the ’14 holiday season, Black Friday shopper activity slide more than 11 percent, while Cyber Monday growth topped 20 percent, according to 2013 Forrester Research.

• About 63 percent of customers say they have downloaded a retailer’s mobile app, but only a third of which use them, according to retailpro.com.

Travel & destination

• That number of online travel bookings via mobile has jumped from 23% in 2012 to 30% in 2013 and to 38% in 2014, according to Consumer Trends and Travel Weekly.

• Travelers spent an average of $6,700 in a 12-month period, with an average of $1,300 per trip.

• Websites such as TripAdvisor are a growing influence in travelers’ decision-making, particularly for all-inclusives and tours.

What Is Mental Accounting: Shopify Guide for 2026

Most Shopify merchants already see the symptom, even if they don't use the term. A shopper ignores a full-price product for weeks, then buys quickly when the offer feels like a reward, a free add-on, or “extra” value. Another customer hesitates over a modest purchase from their monthly budget, then spends a gift card without much friction.
